The Centre for Plasma Physics (CPP) of the Queens University Belfast was formed in November 2006 by a coalescing and focusing of research interests of the former PLIP and AMP groups. The Centre works to advance understanding of ionized matter research with an emphasis on laser and electrically produced plasmas and a focus on femtosecond and high intensity laser, plasma and charged particle interactions with matter at the atomic scale.
CPP members are pursuing a programme of original and internationally acclaimed work in core areas of research within their discipline. In the last few years several substantial grants have enabled us to enhance this research activity through the installation of the 30TW chirped pulse amplification laser facility TARANIS; three new appointments, funded by an EPSRC Science and Innovation award, creating a new activity in plasma theory and a major expansion of work with non-thermal plasmas. CPP creates a critical mass for plasma physics and short-pulse laser interaction research in the UK. Immediate results of synergy in CPP are high laser and ion generated fields; atomic collisions and non-thermal plasmas; development of PIC codes, TARANIS-generated pulses and Thomson scattering for diagnostics in high and low temperature plasmas. Much of the research is performed by exploiting access to cutting-edge facilities, both national and international.
