Neutronics Modeler

We are looking for talented, energetic, and creative neutronics modeler with a proven track record in delivering projects involving neutronics and reactor physics calculations. As a member of the interdisciplinary Stellarator Engineering Team (STEN) you will focus on conducting simulations for neutron irradiation experiments, as well as for the design, analysis, and optimization of key components for stellarator experiment (Chartreuse X) and power plant (Chartreuse P).

You will work closely with a nuclear safety engineers and reactor systems engineers to ensure the key components meet the target performance, safety, and manufacturability.

Our team is young, agile, international and based in the exciting city of Grenoble, by the French Alps.

 

Responsibilities

Individual responsibilities:

  • Model, evaluate, and optimize for the nuclear and radiological impacts on key device systems and analyze the performance of power plant systems including: vacuum vessel and other internal components, blanket and shielding designs, magnet and diagnostics lifetimes, fuel cycle performance, and balance of plant systems.

  • Develop methodologies and models (CAD to neutronic model conversion) for a range of technical challenges to support all Stellarator engineering projects related to the nuclear engineering technical areas including radiation transport, activation analysis, shielding design, nuclear heating, and far-field dose calculations.

  • Be accountable for the quality and accuracy of the previously mentioned work, reports, and presentations.

  • Stay up to date with the latest academic advances, initiate and maintain collaborations with the academic community.


Responsibilities as a team member

  • Interact with the stellarator engineering team on the design, sizing, and evaluation of components of the power plant systems.

  • Interact with the liquid metal team on the choice of blanket materials

 

Qualifications -essential:

  • Degree in Nuclear Engineering/Science/Physics:

    • Master’s Degree.

    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of work experience.

      Work experience should be in the field of nuclear engineering, preferably with diverse applications related to radiation transport. (This includes performing calculations that include shielding analyses, dosimetry, nuclear heating etc.).

  • Experience with both deterministic and Monte Carlo methods of neutron/photon transport

  • Strong analytical skills with fundamental understanding of the first principles of transport methods and nuclear data.

  • Experience with common nuclear engineering software, such as OpenMC, TRIPOLI, MCNP, FISPACT, DARWIN/MENDEL, ORIGEN, etc.

  • In-depth knowledge of radiation shielding and neutronics

  • Capable of solving complex problems and developing models to enable the design, fabrication, irradiation, shipment, and post irradiation examination of irradiation experiments.

  • Knowledge and experience with scientific programming and scripting

  • Written and oral communication skills. Ability to explain complicated concepts clearly and concisely, and critique ideas.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, curiosity and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Qualifications -desirable:

  • Experience with the following: Python, C++, Linux.

  • Experience with modern coding practices; continuous integration, version control (git).

  • Proficient use of High-Performance Computer (HPC) systems.

  • Experience with CAD modelling software and conversion to neutronics models.

  • Knowledge of various nuclear codes and standards.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with: magnetic confinement fusion, and nuclear fusion technologies.

  • A PhD is beneficial but not required.

  • Publication record in neutronics studies.
