STELLARATOR COIL COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICIST

Responsibilities:

  • Individual research responsibilities
    • Design the stellarator coils, in a computational framework flexible w.r.t. magnetic geometries and coil winding surfaces.
    • Develop and implement a combined plasma and coil optimization.
    • Leverage on the latest advances in artificial intelligence, and computational hardware (for example GPU based High-Performance computing architectures).
    • Stay up to date with the latest academic advances, initiate and maintain collaborations with the academic community, present results at conferences.
    • Respond in an agile and proactive way to changes in constraints and design;
    • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of the RF HTS fabrication process to design novel solutions involving high field superconducting films; including solutions outside of stellarator applications.
    • Assist as needed on the coil design for non-fusion spin-offs.
  • Responsibilities as a team member
    • Interact with the engineering division to ensure that the coils satisfy the hard limits and maximize performance from a material, mechanical, technological and economic standpoint.
    • Interact with the equilibrium, transport and physics groups to ensure that the design maximises physically desirable properties.
    • Interface the coil design framework with the analysis tools of the computational and physics departments, so that physics properties of any coil realization can rapidly be analysed.
    • Collaborate with the Mathematics and Computational departments to create, optimize, accelerate and deploy constrained optimization algorithms.

Qualifications -essential:

  • PhD in physics, mathematics or mathematical physics.
  • Excellent programming skills in modern programming languages (Python, C++).
  • Experience with modern coding practices; continuous integration, version control (git).
  • Experience interfacing legacy codes with modern programming languages.
  • Excellent mathematical skills and experience developing novel algorithms.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Strong communication skills and a proven record of disseminating results at conferences.

Qualifications -desirable:

  • PhD in Plasma Physics.
  • Experience in stellarator design.
  • Excellent programming skills in Fortran.
  • Experience in stellarator design.
  • Solid publication record in stellarator coil optimization.
