The 15th CMSS was hosted at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, Belgium. This venue
on its own made it unique and interesting to me, as I was able to watch the soldiers do their
daily practice routines and even had some of them taking lectures with us. The strict rules
around the premises were also interesting to see and experience.
The educational activity was very packed, beneficial and interesting. There were sixty-five
lectures in total on topics ranging from the basics of fusion to current problems in fusion
science and technology as well as future fusion devices. From these lectures, I have been
able to identify fast particle and neutron diagnostic studies as a field of interest for my
research. Also, it was interesting to learn about plasma-material interactions as well as the
principles of plasma heating and wall conditioning. The visits to DIFFER and to FZ Julich were
also very interesting and beneficial as I got to see the latest updates in Tungsten testing and
turbulence studies.
On the side of the poster presentations, there were two days set aside for this. I really
enjoyed explaining details in my poster to other participants, especially to the Founder and
CEO of Renaissance Fusion (partner sponsor of the school), whom I had a great chat with as
he was interested in my research and my song, “Fusion’s Here”. Other very beneficial
discussions I had were with Yevgen Kazakov, Marten Vergoten, Jeff Ongena and Antonius
Donne.
On free hours, I played football with Yevgen Kazakov and visited interesting sites in the city
of Brussels with other participants. This school made me a set of new friends and I am
grateful to Fusenet for making it possible to be part of the summer school.
Finally, I must state that I recommend this summer school to other students as it provides a
lot of knowledge, fun and opportuniƟes to network with people, without compromising on
any.
