My name is David Becker, and I am a Master student at TU Eindhoven. Partly thanks to
FuseNet, I was able to do a 5-month internship at ITER in St. Paul-lez-Durance, France.
ITER is an international collaborative project aimed at demonstrating the scientific and
technical feasibility of nuclear fusion as a new green energy source for the future. I am glad
to have had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing project, to work in such an
interesting international environment and to live in the south of France for five months. I also
enjoyed meeting a lot of other interns from all over the world!
During my internship I worked on synthetic diagnostic modelling for Charge Exchange
Recombination Spectroscopy (CXRS). Specifically, I had to make/improve a model that
predicts the emission from passive charge exchange reactions at the edge of the plasma. It
was a very interesting project an I really enjoyed working in a diverse team of fusion experts.
During my stay in France I lived in the beautiful Aix-en-Provence, a student city in which
most of the other interns also lived and a 40 minute bus ride away from the ITER site. Next
to Aix, I was able to visit a lot of places in the Provence together with other interns and
friends and family that came to visit me! Especially Marseille and Nice surprised me in a
positive way, and I would definitely go back one day.
I am really glad to have had this amazing opportunity and I look forward to continue my
education and work in the field of fusion!
