Research visit to San Diego, early 2015
Report by Luxherta Buzi. Powered by FuseNet
A visit to the University of California in San Diego was planned in my Fusion DC program mobility scheme already at the beginning of the year 2015. I am very thankful to Russ Doerner who hosted me at the university and made my stay in San Diego pleasant and successful.
My research is focused on the influence of the particle flux on surface modifications of tungsten as a part of plasma material interaction studies. During my stay in San Diego, I performed experiments at PISCES (see image below), a linear plasma device investigating the role of particle flux on deuterium retention and surface modifications of tungsten when helium impurities were present in the plasma. I feel privileged for having had the opportunity to work with colleagues from the PISCES lab; I learned a lot from working together and the lab provided a great environment for PhD students to learn and gain knowledge. You can read more about the results of my experiments here.
All in all, the two months of my stay at PISCES were long enough to fulfil the experimental plan which turned out very successful, but never enough to enjoy the Californian sun, nature and culture!
I am lucky that early this year, I managed to exchange two months of the German winter with a Californian one and obtained good results for my PhD research while doing so. I therefor look forward to many more future visits. And last but not least, I want to express my appreciation to FuseNet for making this research visit possible by covering part of the expenses.
