Only a few weeks to go before I will (hopefully) graduate. After my graduation, I am in the position to call myself a Master of Science in both Applied Physics and Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion. Before I finish my report and start preparing for the oral presentation and the defense, I decided that I wanted to experience one additional aspect of the life of a physicist/researcher: attending a conference!
I had the honor to present the work of my graduation project at the 11th Joint Runaway Electron Modelling (REM) and JET SPI Analysis Meeting. This conference took place between June 10 and June 14 at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. A beautiful landscape at the shore of the Lake of Geneva surrounded by impressive mountains.
My graduation project is conducted at the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education of the Eindhoven University ofTechnology. In my work, I investigate the effectiveness of the ECRH- induced expulsion of runaway electrons at the Tokamak â Configuration Variable. In my work, I showed that this technique can be (part of) a successful motivation strategy of runaway electrons.
The best part of the conference is that everyone gets the opportunity to present their work and receive useful feedback on the work in a small community of great participants! I really liked the opportunity to (socially) connect with many impressive researchers in the field of runaway electrons. It was a pleasure to present my work in front of this great audience.
Besides the presentations, there was luckily also some room for an outing. We went high up in the mountains to a place called Les Avants. On the way up, we enjoyed the beautiful panoramic views of the Lake of Geneva. At Les Avants we started with a beautiful hike consisting of some steep Ascents and muddy descents. The beautiful panoramic views of the city of Lausanne at the top of Le Cubly where certainly worth the slip I made. Luckily, I did not hurt myself in this awkward moment. After the hike, we went to the restaurant next to the train station, and we enjoyed a wonderful three course meal! The rush to finish our desert was a little bit unfortunate, but we could not know that later that evening construction work started around the route of the train.
In the end, I really enjoyed my time at the conference, and I am lucky I met quite some nice people! I would recommend everyone to participate in such a conference if you get the opportunity!
