Prof. Hartmut Zohm: Nuclear fusion research

German Language Video

The fusion of hydrogen nuclei is the energy source of the stars. For more than half a century, researchers have been working to make this process usable on earth and have come very close to their goal. Starting from the sun, the lecture will show how a fusion power plant should be implemented on earth. The current status as well as the worldwide plans for the next step, the proof of the positive energy balance, are presented in detail. Prof. Hartmut Zohm is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, where he is responsible for the operation of the tokamak experiment ASDEX Upgrade. His scientific focus is on the research of plasma instabilities that limit the plasma parameters that can be achieved.
