In fusion plasma devices, neutrons are the carriers of most of the exhausted fusion power. Neutron diagnostics are herefore the basic tool to determine the total fusion power and the ion fuel ratio (nD/nT), but also the plasma ion temperature and rotation velocity.
Spectroscopic neutron measurements will be crucial in advanced nuclear fusion reactors such as ITER and DEMO and will require the development of efficient and resilient neutron diagnostics technologies, accounting for neutron activation and damage issues.
Development and validation of neutron sensors and monitoring setups designed to withstand large fluxes of energetic neutrons with a spectrum similar to the D-T fusion neutron spectrum is also one of the key challenges of the IFMIF-DONES project.
The 2021 edition of the PhDiaFusion Summer School of Plasma Diagnostics will cover the design, modelling and experimental qualification aspects of the novel neutron diagnostics.
Important note
Our priority is health and safety of all our School participants and their families. Thus, in the event of further Covid-19 pandemic situation and restrictions or local lockdowns we will make alternative arrangements for the School (with possible postponing of the event to December 2021).
