There is no bigger challenge than ensuring clean and safe energy production to meet the requirements of a growing world population. Nuclear fusion offers a potential long-term clean energy solution that does not produce greenhouse gases or long-lived radioactive waste. However, several technological challenges must be solved before fusion energy can power our grids. Control engineering plays a key role in safe and efficient operation of a fusion tokamaks. This PhD position focuses on developing advanced model-based control systems for fusion tokamaks. The project will be carried out at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Eindhoven, in close collaboration with the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER) in Eindhoven.
A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in control systems, fusion technology, plasma physics, or related programme.
A research-oriented attitude.
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with other research institutions, such as ITER, Swiss Plasma Center at EPFL, Max-Planck Institute etc.
Motivated to coach students.
- Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).
