Postdoctoral Computational Scientist (m/f/d)

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association), is one of the leading centres for fusion research and is engaged in developing the physical foundations for a future fusion power plant. The institute is affiliated with the European Fusion Programme.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching (Munich), Germany offers a position as a Postdoctoral Computational Scientist(m/f/d) within the Numerical Methods of Plasma Physics (NMPP) division. The NMPP division is developing the 6D tokamak turbulence simulation code BSL6D, which simulates the gyrating particles without recourse to the gyrokinetic ordering. The code targets very large high performance computers and is written in C++ based on the KOKKOS framework. To unlock the possibilities of exascale computations you will be involved in the development and analysis of novel numerical ways to transmit the domain boundaries between individual nodes computing the evolving turbulence allowing the process to go on unimpeded by the information flow in the interconnect network.

Your tasks

  • Contribution to the development and optimization of the BSL6D code.
  • Derivation and implementation of numerical methods for gyro-optimized Vlasov simulations.
  • Publication and communication of scientific results
  • Participation in the general tasks of the division

Your profile

  • Completed studies (Master/University) and PhD in mathematics, physics, computational science and engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience in the development and implementation of numerical algorithms for partial differential equations
  • Good programming skills, in particular in C++
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Knowledge of numerical methods for function approximation, the solution of partial differential equations and the Vlasov equation.

Our offer

  • A fascinating job at one of the leading international research institutes for fusion and plasma research
  • A secure and stable place of employment
  • 30 days of annual vacation plus additional time off on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (24. and 31. December)
  • Flexible working hours
  • Regular training and professional development opportunities
  • Employer-funded pension scheme (VBL), capital accumulation benefits (vermögenswirksame Leistungen) and additional social benefits from the German public sector (TVöD Bund)
  • On-site canteen
  • Diverse employee benefits (e.g. family services, occupational health management programme, discounts on vacation and mobile home rentals)
  • Free parking spots on and near the campus
  • Subsidised public transportation tickets (e.g. Deutschlandticket) with a direct connection to the Munich metro system (U Bahn)
  • Career development support through the IPP Career Center for Postdocs and Max Planck Society postdoc resources

The position is limited to a duration of two years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).

The IPP seeks to increase the proportion of employed women in those areas where they are underrepresented and explicitly encourages women to apply for this position. The IPP is committed to employing more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
