I did my Internship at the Max Planck institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald. Or, as most of you will probably know it, I did my internship at Wendelstein 7‐X. In my internship I created a tool to aid in the design and optimisation of quasi‐optical transmission lines. In the case of W7‐X it will be used in the future for the relocation of the Collective Thomson Scattering transmission line.

I started by doing literature research into quasi‐optics, the corresponding Gaussian Beams and how these interact with the mirrors in the system. I then implemented everything to in code to perform actual mirror optimization. Even though I mainly worked on the project by myself, the environment, with lots of like‐minded people and W7‐X so close by, was inspiring. Being able to actual go and visit what everyone was working on was really cool! In general, the institute was a nice and easy place to work.

Outside of work Greifswald was lots of fun as well. With plenty of other interns and phd’ers to hang out with there is always something to do. You can go and hang out at the Greifswald harbor to have a drink or go to one of the many cozy bars. On a good day you can even go and have a beer in the Baltic sea at Eldena Beach. If, you want to go and to some sports: the boulder gym called Grips is very nice. It is a fun place to go with friends as well.

The surrounding area of Greifswald is quite fun to explore as well. Stralsund is definitely a must with a nice old town and amazing aquarium. Also, the nuclear fission complex at Lubmin offer to rare opportunity to actually look inside of a built but never used fission reactor.

Overall, I had an amazing time in Greifswald with a fun project, inspiring location and lots of fun things to do!
