My name is Matteo Maria Robaldo, I’m 25 and I attended the Master of Science in Energy and Nuclear Engineering at Polytechnic of Turin where I graduated this March. As a final part of my studies, I spent 3 months in Belgium, more precisely at the KU Leuven university, where I developed my master thesis on Computational modelling of the plasma boundary exploiting the SOLPS-ITER code. From August 21 2023 to March 13 2024, I worked within the Complex Plasmas research group at the Space and Plasma Physics Division of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, in order to develop my MSc thesis in Nuclear Engineering. Therefore I talked with DIFFER for an internship and they delivered. I also wanted to go to Japan since I did karate and that country fascinates me. From 8 of January to 22 of February of this year, I had the privilege of doing my graduation project at the Tokamak Energy Ltd in Oxfordshire, England. In collaboration with the team, I investigated how PF coils currents and voltages evolve in spherical tokamak for a replacement with HTSs. Extensive modeling activities have been undertaken such as TRUST (Tuscia Research University Small Tokamak), a new small tokamak currently being designed at the University of Tuscia.

During my internship at the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany, from November to February, I worked with the MHD and fast particles group, under the supervision of Matthias Hoelzl and Verena Mitterauer. My task involved using the MHD code JOREK to study the effects of screening of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) by nearby conducting structures and plasma in a tokamak. RMPs are crucial for controlling edge localized modes (ELMs), which can damage plasma-facing components in fusion reactors.

From January to July of this year, I had the privilege of doing my graduation project at the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP) in Greifswald, Germany. In collaboration with the W7-X team, I investigated how electrical currents evolve in stellarators.

The PlasmaSurf Summer Course, organized by the Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear, took place from July 16th to July 21st, 2023, and it proved to be an enriching educational experience. It was an excellent summer school with numerous interesting lectures and an exceptional accompanying program.
