A journey into plasma cleaning for fusion optical components– my Master’s internship at the University of Basel 

Hello! My name is Agnieszka Bukowicka, and I am a fifth-year Chemical Physics student at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. As part of my degree, I had an outstanding opportunity to undertake a 9-month-long master's thesis placement at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald, Germany.

Hi! My name is Alessandro, I come from the University of Bologna, in Italy, where I studiedNuclear Physics. From October 2024 to April 2025, I had the great opportunity and pleasure of performing my master’s thesis internship at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) at MIT in Boston, USA. This thesis, financially supported by FuseNet, concludes the master’s program in plasma physics I have been following at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.  

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Xcitech Spring School inDubrovnik, a specialized program focused on fusion science and technology. As aphysicist specializing in particle and accelerator physics, this experience was notonly enriching on a professional level but also deeply inspiring on a personal one.

At the beginning of February 2025, my colleagues Haluk, Gabriele, and I had the luck to attend a PhD course at EPFL Switzerland. This course is open to visitors and students from other universities as a winter school. We run into this opportunity at the end of November 2024 through a LinkedIn post on EPFL. For us, going to EPFL just for two weeks was already a dream: since I'm seeking to do a PhD, the amazing campus and the fame of the research environment of this world-leading university make us wonder how researchers live there.

"The future of energy lies in mastering the power of fusion—controlling the stars here on Earth."  This quote perfectly encapsulates the amazing experience I had during my training in tokamak fusion reactor control!
